List of 5-wicket hauls by Indian bowlers in T20I cricket

Arshdeep Singh is the leading wicket-taker for India in T20I cricket.
T20I cricket is a merciless format for the bowlers. The 20-over game offers very little margin for error for the bowlers, and the batsmen are even able to hit good balls for boundaries.
Over the years, India have produced several top bowlers in T20 cricket. The emergence of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has given young bowlers early exposure to some of the world’s best batsmen, helping them grow in their careers.
India are one of the most successful T20I teams. They are one of the three countries to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup twice. They have attained their T20I success on the back of exceptional performances from their bowlers.
On that note, let’s take a look at the list of five-wicket hauls by Indian bowlers in T20I cricket.
List of five-wicket hauls by Indian bowlers in T20I cricket:
1. Yuzvendra Chahal – 6/25 vs England, Bengaluru, 2017
Known for the art of deceiving batsmen with flight and pace variation, Yuzvendra Chahal was the first Indian bowler to pick a five-wicket haul in T20I cricket. Chahal took 6/25 in the third T20I of England’s tour of India in 2017 in Bengaluru.
India amassed 202 runs before Chahal’s brilliance bowled out England for 127 runs. Chahal’s six-for included the wickets of Eoin Morgan, Joe Root and Ben Stokes.
2. Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 5/24 vs South Africa, Johannesburg, 2018
Veteran India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered a match-winning performance in the first T20I of India’s tour of South Africa in 2018 in Johannesburg.
Defending a mammoth 204-run target, Bhuvneshwar starred for India with the ball, finishing with figures of 5/24. Kumar’s sensational spell, which included key wickets of Reeza Hendricks and Heinrich Klaasen, helped India secure a 28-run victory.
3. Kuldeep Yadav – 5/24 vs England, Manchester, 2018
Kuldeep Yadav’s crucial spell of 5/24 came in the first T20I of the India tour of England 2018 in Manchester. Opting to bowl first Kuldeep’s terrific efforts with the ball helped India restrict the hosts to a below-par total of 159 runs.
He dismissed Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan in his first spell, then got Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, and Chris Jordan in his second spell. KL Rahul led India’s chase with a 54-ball century, giving India a 1-0 lead in the series.
4. Deepak Chahar – 6/7 vs Bangladesh, Nagpur, 2019
Speedster Deepak Chahar holds the record for the best bowling figures by any Indian bowler in T20I cricket for his figures of 6/7, which he registered in 2019 against Bangladesh in Nagpur.
Defending a target of 174, Chahar tore through Bangladesh’s top order by dismissing Soumya Sarkar and Mohammad Mithun. His brilliant spell helped India bowl out the visitors for 144 and secure a comfortable win.
5. Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 5/4 vs Afghanistan, Dubai, 2022
Bhuvneshwar repeated his heroics four years later against Afghanistan in Dubai during the Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2022.
Batting first, India posted 212/2, powered by Virat Kohli’s 122-run knock. Then, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s early strikes left Afghanistan struggling at 21/6 after seven overs. India ultimately won by 101 runs, with Bhuvneshwar finishing with 5/4 in his four overs.
6. Kuldeep Yadav – 5/17 vs South Africa, Johannesburg, 2023
Spinner Kuldeep Yadav picked up five wickets in the third T20I of India’s tour of South Africa in 2023 in Johannesburg.
After posting 201/7 in the first innings, Kuldeep’s five-wicket haul (5/17) helped India bowl out South Africa for just 95 runs.
7. Varun Chakaravarthy – 5/17 vs South Africa, Gqeberha, 2024
Varun Chakravarthy’s return to T20I cricket in 2024 was remarkable. One of his best performances came against South Africa in Gqeberha, where he took 5/17 and nearly helped India defend their 124-run total. India lost by three wickets.
8. Varun Chakaravarthy – 5/24 vs England, Rajkot, 2025
Varun Chakravarthy took his second T20I five-for in the third T20I of England’s tour of India in 2025. In Rajkot, Varun used the slowness of the surface to full effect and drew false strokes from English batters to finish with excellent figures of 5/24.
Unfortunately, once again, despite Varun’s five-for, India lost the game by 26 runs. He was, however, named Player of the Match for his efforts.
