In test cricket’s history, only twice have six bowlers conceded more than 100 runs in a test innings.

The compelling aspect of test cricket is the equal competition and battle between the bowlers and batsmen, shaped by the changing nature of the pitch across multiple days.

Both the bowlers and batters have to fight it out in the middle to earn their wickets and runs, respectively. However, there are some instances when the batsmen have piled up huge runs – scores of over even 700 – and ran the bowling attack into the ground with multiple bowlers conceding over 100 runs in an innings.

On that note, let’s take a look at instances when six bowlers conceded 100+ runs in an innings in test cricket.

Instances when six bowlers conceded 100 or more runs in an innings in tests:

1. Zimbabwe vs Sri Lanka, 2004

The first time six bowlers conceded 100 or more runs in an innings in a test match happened during the Bulawayo test match between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in May 2004.

Zimbabwe bowlers achieved this unwanted record when their six bowlers conceded more than 100 runs as Sri Lanka amassed over 700 runs.

Batting first, Sri Lanka declared at 713/3 after Kumar Sangakkara slammed 270 runs. During the Sri Lankan innings, Douglas Hondo, Tinashe Panyangara, Tawanda Mupariwa, Mluleki Nkala, Elton Chigumbura, and Stuart Matsikenyeri conceded over 100 runs each.

In reply, Zimbabwe made 228 and 231 in both innings and lost the match by an innings and 254 runs.

2. Pakistan vs England, 2024

The Pakistan cricket team became the second team whose six bowlers conceded 100 or more runs in an innings during a test match. They achieved this embarrassing record during the first Multan test against England in October 2024.

Pakistan made 556 runs after opener Abdullah Shafique and skipper Shan Masood notched up brilliant centuries.

In reply, England Joe’s Root played a fantastic knock of 262 and youngster Harry Brook slammed 317, which guided the visitors to 823/7d. Pakistan’s six bowlers – Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Abrar Ahmed, Aamer Jamal, Afgha Salman, and Saim Ayub – conceded more than 100 runs in England’s first innings.

Pakistan were bundled out for 220 runs in their second innings and suffered a crushing defeat by an innings and 47 runs.
