Rohit Sharma has been picked as captain of ICC men’s ODI team of the year 2023.

A total of six Indian players made the cut as ICC announced the men’s ODI team of the year for 2023. The team also consists of two Australians, two South Africans, and one New Zealand cricketer. Rohit Sharma will be captaining the side after he took India to the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Rohit scored an incredible 1255 runs at an average of 52 this year, and he demonstrated his skill at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with a remarkable innings of 131 against Afghanistan in Delhi.

His teammate Virat Kohli dazzled back in form in 2023 and hammered six centuries in the year. He amassed 1377 runs and of course, broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most international centuries during India’s World Cup campaign, earning him the Player of the Tournament award. He had scored 765 runs in World Cup 2023 with three centuries and six fifties to his name.

Shubman Gill was the other India batter who top-scored in ODIs in 2023 with 1584 runs, scoring five centuries in total. He had started the year with 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad.

Kuldeep Yadav starred with 49 wickets in ODIs in 2023. The spinner’s greatest haul came against arch-rivals Pakistan during the Asia Cup’s Super Four stage when he collected fantastic figures of 5/25 to help India win the game.

India pacers Mohammad Shami and Mohammed Siraj were also named in the ICC ODI men’s team of the year in 2023. Siraj starred with 44 wickets in ODIs with a best of 6/21 in the Asia Cup 2023 final, which helped India decimate Sri Lanka.

Mohammad Shami, on the other hand, took four fifers in ODIs in 2023 and finished with 24 scalps in ODI World Cup 2023. His magnificent spell of 7/57 – the best bowling figures for an Indian men’s player in ODI history – in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in Mumbai stood out most.

Travis Head and Adam Zampa from the World Champions Australian team make a cut; Pat Cummins misses out

Travis Head and Adam Zampa from 2023 ODI World Champions team Australia made the cut as well. Head was included for his brilliant outing in the World Cup, despite missing the first half due to a hand injury. He scored two centuries in the CWC, while also picking up the Player of the Match awards in the semi-final and final of the tournament.

Adam Zampa helped himself to a total of 38 wickets at a decent average of around 26 in the year. He collected a trio of four-wicket hauls in consecutive matches during Australia’s successful run at the World Cup.

Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand scored 1204 runs at an imposing average of 52.34 and an even more eye-catching strike rate just north of 100. He was the only batter to core centuries against India in the World Cup, with 137 coming in the semi-final of the tournament.

South African duo of Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen complete the ODI team of the year. Klaasen hammered 174 against Australia in Centurion and then hit a quick 109 against England in Mumbai in the World Cup.

Marco Jansen won the all-rounders’ spot in the ICC ODI team of the year 2023. Jansen scored a quickfire 47 and collected his maiden five-wicket ODI haul against Australia in September.

ICC’s ODI Team of the Year 2023:

Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Travis Head, Virat Kohli, Daryl Mitchell, Heinrich Klassen (WK), Marco Jansen, Adam Zampa, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami.
