Afghanistan will kickoff their ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against New Zealand on February 8.
The complete schedule for ICC T20 World Cup 2026 was announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday, November 25. A total of 20 teams will clash in the in the tournament, which will be played in February and March next year.
India and Sri Lanka are the hosts of ICC T20 World Cup 2026, with the former also being the defending champions. Afghanistan Cricket Team, who reached the semi-finals of the last edition of the tournament in 2024, will be in focus during the multi-national tournament.
Two months ago in September, Afghanistan suffered a first-round exit in Asia Cup 2025, losing clashes against Asian rivals Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. However, they were one of the magnificent teams in the last ICC T20 World Cup, where they crushed world giants Australia and New Zealand. Their journey ended after losing the semi-final to South Africa.
Rashid Khan is the current captain of Afghanistan in T20I cricket and might lead the side in the multi-national tournament. However, the Asian side are also known for changing captains ahead of big tournaments in the past.

In ICC T20 World Cup 2026, Afghanistan are part of Group D alongside South Africa, New Zealand, UAE, and Canada. Afghanistan will kickstart their journey in the tournament with an encounter against New Zealand on February 8 in Chennai. Later, they will clash against South Africa and the UAE. Their final game of the first round is against Canada on February 19.
