Watch: Aiden Markram castles David Warner to give South Africa first breakthrough in the CWC 2023 semis

Aiden Markram dismissed David Warner in the first ball of his opening spell.

Australia got off to a flier against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata in the 2nd semi-final of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Australian opener David Warner (29) and Travis Head had a magnificent opening stand of 60 runs in the first 6 overs and took Australia almost closer to the final of the World Cup 2023. The winner of this game will be taking on hosts India who have qualified for the finals with an unbeaten run in the last 10 games.

Eden Gardens provided great assistance to the spinners and Temba Bavuma brought in part-timer Aiden Markram inside the first power play. Markram immediately striked and gave Australia their first shock in the game. Australian opener David Warner smashed 4 sixes and a four in his 18-ball stay at the crease and scored 29 runs. With him, Travis Head (62) also had a tremendous run in the first 6 overs and later on, he scored fifty.

It was the first ball of Aiden Markram’s spell and David Warner looked to play a cut shot moving away from the stumps. It was a regulation off-spinning delivery where David Warner exposed his stumps and looked to play a cut but he missed the line completely and the ball went on to crash the stumps. Markram brought in hopes for South Africa after the first wicket of the game. Spinners are dominating the game at Eden Gardens wicket.

In the next over, Kagiso Rabada got Mitchell Marsh caught out to Rassie van der Dussen. Dussen took a magnificent catch to dismiss Marsh who was the hero for Australia against Bangladesh in their last league round encounter. Marsh got dismissed for a six-ball duck in the game. Travis Head was the only batter who took on South African bowlers aggressively and the rest looked struggling against the African bowling attack.

David Miller played a magical knock to take South Africa’s total above 200 runs and they finished on 212. David Miller smashed his 6th ODI ton and also became the first ever batter from South Africa to score a hundred in the ICC Cricket World Cup knockout game. South African batters also struggled against Australian pacers and they were 4 wickets down in just 24 runs after winning the toss. South African captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and elected to bat.
