India have announced their 17-member full squad for the Asia Cup 2023, with Sanju Samson as backup.
Indian team selection saw a welcome change under new chief Ajit Agarkar. Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar and Indian captain Rohit Sharma came before the press to announce the team for the Asia Cup 2023 scheduled to be played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. To bring more transparency in the team selection process, Agarkar and captain Rohit responded to the media in every decision they took and also about the future of Indian cricket. India announced their 17-member Asia Cup squad along with Sanju Samson as a backup in the team. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also revealed the date of the World Cup squad announcement in the press conference.
Coming back on 5th September
While responding to media questions on India’s possible squad for the World Cup and by when Indian fans will get their World Cup 2023 squad, Ajit Agarkar said that they will be coming again on 5th September during the Asia Cup to announce the official 15-member full-strength team for the upcoming World Cup. By then India will be done with their two league games in the Asia Cup. They will open their campaign against Pakistan on 2nd September and then play Nepal on 4th September at Pallekele Stadium in Kandy.
Indian team management and selectors will get a clear idea of the fitness, and form before deciding on the next course of action. World Cup 2023 is scheduled to begin on 5th October and the final deadline to submit a World Cup squad is 30 days before the tournament. 5th September is the official deadline for all the boards to decide on their best 15 players for the mega event. So far only Australia and England have announced their preliminary squad for the World Cup but yet to take a final call. India’s World Cup campaign will begin on 8th October against Australia in Chennai.
India are back at their almost full strength as Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah are all back in the 50-overs format. Ajit Agarkar also informed that KL Rahul is still having a niggle but they are certain that he will be fit for the first game against Pakistan in Kandy. Indian selectors have given Suryakumar Yadav another opportunity in the 50-overs format. Ishan Kishan is included as a reserve wicket-keeper batter. They have dropped Yuzvendera Chahal from the squad as keeping two wrist spinners in the same team may not be a good strategy as explained by Ajit Agarkar.
