‘Lot of nasty comments’ Alex Carey recollects the incident at Lord’s.

Ashes 2023 saw a massive controversy over Jonny Bairstow’s run-out in the second test at Lord’s. Wicket-keeper Alex Carey and his Australian team drew massive criticism for not following the ‘spirit of cricket’ in the game. Discussions went on around Bairstow’s run-out about whether the Aussie followed the rule of law or not.

Alex Carey became the centre of all the criticism and was forced to shut down his Instagram after the continuous abuses he got from the English fans after the incident. Later, Cricket Australia’s cyber police investigated the disgusting abuse being hurled in his direction. Australia retained the Ashes 2023 series as they played a 2-2 draw for the third consecutive time in England

Carey ‘family’ got the abuse after incident

Not only the Australian wicket-keeper, but his wife, Eloise Carey, and his young children also received abuse directed towards them. Alex Carey, recalling that period, said, “There were a lot of nasty comments that came my way or came the family’s way. So post-incident, it was pretty aggressive. I didn’t really look into it much; I didn’t have to. I had a lot of people looking at it and monitoring it.”

Alex Carey added, “I actually deleted Instagram for a week or so and just put the phone down and focused on being present with the family.” In an interview, Wicket-keeper also revealed that he was surprised with the nastiness they received while walking back.

Carey says everyone’s entitled to their opinion

Talking about the controversial moment, -Australian wicket-keeper said, “We got some pretty instant feedback. It’s one of those things where a stumping that’s given out of the field is turned into a massive story. I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I absolutely respect that. And everyone’s entitled to their opinion on the spirit of cricket as well.”

In the rulebook, Bairstow’s dismissal was legal, and most of Australians defended their actions in the game. Australian players suffered a massive blow from the crowd, and three MCC members were also suspended for misbehaving with Usman Khawaja and David Warner.
