Super Over was first introduced by the ICC in 2008.
In 2008, the ICC introduced the Super Over. After that, it has become a popular method that decides the outcome of tied matches in international cricket. Before super overs, either the difference in wickets was considered to decide the outcome of the game, or the game was considered tied.
Then, ahead of the 2007 T20 World Cup, the ICC introduced a football-style bowl-off between the two sides in case the match ended in a tie. The first bowl-off was used in 2006, when the Kiwis defeated the West Indies in a T20I 3-0. Then, in the 2007 World Cup, India famously defeated Pakistan by 3-0 in a group stage game.
However, in 2008, the ICC introduced the Super Over method to decide the result of a T20I match in place of the bowl-out. The first-ever Super Over happened in a tied T20I game between New Zealand and the West Indies. New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori bowled the over, while Chris Gayle and Xavier Marshall batted for the West Indies.
Gayle hit 25 runs in 6 balls. In response, Kiwis opened with Brendon McCullum and Jacob Oram, with Suleiman Benn bowling. Oram and the next man, Ross Taylor, were dismissed as New Zealand only made 15 runs, giving West Indies the win.
Since then, more than 30 T20I games have been decided by Super Over, and below are all of them.
