BCCI appoints Amol Muzumdar as the new head coach of Indian Women's Cricket Team

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced the appointment of Amol Muzumdar as the new head coach for the India women's national cricket team. This development was confirmed in a press release issued by BCCI on October 25. Muzumdar's selection was a unanimous decision by Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which consists of Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra, and Jatin Paranjape.

Interestingly, this role had remained vacant for close to 10 months following the removal of Ramesh Powar as part of a restructuring process.

Amol Muzumdar is a renowned figure in India's domestic cricket, having amassed an impressive career total of over 11,000 runs over two decades, which includes an impressive 30 centuries. He enjoyed a highly successful stint with Mumbai team, contributing significantly to their numerous Ranji Trophy victories. Later in his career, he also represented teams such as Assam and Andhra Pradesh.

“I am deeply honoured and privileged to be appointed as the Head Coach of the Indian Women's Cricket Team. I thank the CAC and the BCCI for placing their trust in me and believing in my vision and the roadmap for Team India," told Muzumdar as per the BCCI press release.

"This is a huge responsibility and I look forward to working closely with talented players and providing them with the right preparation and guidance to excel. The next two years are extremely important as two World Cups are scheduled in the period. Together with the coaching and support staff, we will look to tick every box and give ourselves the best chance to succeed,” he added.

Former cricketer and BCCI president Roger Binny and BCCI secretary Jay Shah welcomed Muzumdar on being the head coach.

Roger Binny, said, "I welcome the appointment of Mr. Amol Muzumdar as the Head Coach of the Indian Women's Cricket Team. I am confident that under his tenure, the team will continue to rise and perform well across different formats of the game. The team has consistently delivered impressive performances in bilateral and multi-nation events, and I am certain our players will benefit immensely under Mr. Muzumdar's guidance and roadmap.”

Mr. Jay Shah, the Honorary Secretary of the BCCI said, “I thank the CAC for conducting a thorough evaluation and selection process to identify the new Head Coach for our national team and I congratulate Mr. Amol Muzumdar on his appointment. He brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise and possesses a keen understanding of the modern game. The BCCI is strongly committed to women's cricket and will continue to provide an environment necessary for the team to excel both on and off the field. The Board will fully support Mr. Muzumdar and work closely with him to help our players reach their full potential.”

Muzumdar's coaching journey commenced with his role as the batting coach for India's U-19 and U-23 cricket teams. Subsequently, he took on the position of batting consultant for Netherlands men's national cricket team. He also gained significant experience in Indian Premier League (IPL) by serving as the batting coach for Rajasthan Royals during multiple seasons. Furthermore, during South Africa's recent tour of India, Muzumdar held the esteemed role of being the batting consultant for Proteas, contributing his valuable insights and expertise to their batting department.
