Andre Russell made his international cricket debut for the West Indies in 2010.

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 37-year-old player will pull down the curtains on his international cricket career during the upcoming T20I series against Australia.

Russell has been one of the best hard-hitting batters to play for the West Indies in T20Is. He has so far played 84 T20Is and slammed 1078 runs in 73 innings at an average of 22.0. He owns a wonderful strike rate of 163.09 and has slammed three half-centuries. With the ball, he claimed 61 wickets, with his best bowling figures being 3/19, which came against England in 2023. He was also part of the West Indies side that won the ICC T20 World Cups in 2012 and 2016.

Russell also has played played 56 ODIs, scoring 1034 runs in 47 innings at an average of 27.21. With a top knock of 92 runs, the right-handed batter scored four fifties in ODIs. With the ball, he scalped 70 wickets in ODI cricket. He played only one test match in his career, against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2010, which marked his international cricket debut.

Andre Russell to retire after second T20I against Australia

Russell has announced that he will retire after playing the first two T20Is against Australia in his home country Jamaica. The T20I series between the West Indies and Australia will witness five games. The first and second games will take place on July 20 and July 22 respectively at Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica.

Russell is part of the West Indies squad for the first two games. Matthew Forde will replace him in the squad for last three matches of the T20I series.

Speaking about his retirement, Russell said that playing for the West Indies was his biggest achievement in life.

“Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life. When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realize what you can achieve,” he said.

“This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others,” he added.

Meanwhile, Australia’s tour of the West Indies 2025 will conclude with the fifth T20I game on July 28 at Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts. Recently, Australia whitewashed the West Indies 3-0 in the test series.
