Shakib Al Hasan is facing severe criticism over his 'time out' decision against Angelo Mathews.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan may have been ruled out of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 due to injury, but he is still receiving severe criticism for his decision to appeal for a ‘Time Out’ against former Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews. Matthews was ruled ‘timed out’ when he couldn’t make himself ready to face the bowler. Shakib’s decision prompted discussion around the dismissal. There are also questions raised over Shakib Al Hasan’s ‘Spirit of the Game’.

Now, the former Sri Lankan captain’s brother has gone overboard and threatened Shakib Al Hasan. The elder brother of Angelo Mathews, Trevin, has warned Shakib Al Hasan against entering Sri Lanka to play either in Lanka Premier League (LPL) or even international cricket on the island. While speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Trevin Mathews called Shakib’s move at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi a disgrace to the game of cricket.

'Fans will throw stones' threat

While warning Bangladeshi skipper Shakib Al Hasan, Trevin said, “Shakib is not welcome in Sri Lanka. If he comes here to play any international or LPL matches, stones will be thrown at him, or he will have to face the annoyance of the fans.” Shakib Al Hasan defended his stance after getting Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews timed out and said that it was well within the rule and everyone is welcome to interpret it in their own way.

Angelo Mathews' elder brother Trevin also slammed Shakib’s sportsman spirit and added, “We are very disappointed. The Bangladeshi captain has no sportsman spirit and does not show humanity in the gentleman’s game.” Trevin Mathews has also played club cricket in Sri Lanka. Angelo Mathews came out with video evidence after the game and slammed Bangladesh skipper Shakib, along with the umpires, for a poor decision in the field.

Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of the World Cup 2023 due to an injury to his left thumb. Shakib will be missing Bangladesh's final game against Australia at MCA Stadium in Pune on November 11. Bangladesh are out of the race for the semi-finals, and currently, they are fighting hard for Champions Trophy qualification along with defending champions England, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands. Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead Bangladesh against Australia.
