Watch: Angelo Mathews takes his revenge, sends off Shakib Al Hasan with "Time" gesture after dismissing him in CWC 2023

Angelo Mathews had become the first-ever batter to be dismissed timed out in international cricket in the first innings.

Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews had the last laugh as he got the better of Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan and made an epic gesture towards him in a send-off in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match being played in Delhi.

In what was an extremely controversial, but correct decision, Angelo Mathews was dismissed timed out as he failed to get ready to face his first ball at the crease.

The event occurred in the 25th over, when the 36-year-old walked out to bat after Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed, but discovered that the helmet strap was broken and promptly signaled for a replacement rather than facing bowler Shakib Al Hasan.

This caused Bangladesh to appeal for a 'time out.' Mathews was seen having an intense conversation with umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth, indicating that he was experiencing a problem with the helmet strap. He also approached Shakib, who refused to withdraw his appeal, forcing the Sri Lankan cricketer to leave the pitch.

A furious Mathews entered the dugout and smashed his helmet on the ground. This was the first-ever timed out dismissal in any international match, men’s or women’s. However, there have been six such instances in domestic cricket, including one in the match between Tripura and Orissa at Cuttack in 1997 when Hemulal Yadav was at the receiving end.

Angelo Mathews dismisses Shakib Al Hasan and gets his revenge

Mathews avenged himself in the second innings, dismissing Shakib Al Hasan in the 32nd over of the contest. Shakib, who was batting at 82 off 65 balls, was caught by Charith Asalanka after getting a leading edge while trying to force the ball to the leg side.

Mathews quickly pointed to his left wrist and smiled at Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan, mocking him for his antics in the first innings. Shakib did not respond to the taunt and walked away with his head down.
