Angelo Mathews became the first batter to be given “timed out” in international cricket.

Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka has been doing everything to showcase how wrong the officials and Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan were to appeal for his dismissal in the latest Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match.

This encounter was played in Delhi on November 6, 2023, and saw Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. Sri Lanka struggled a bit at the halfway mark as they lost their fourth wicket in the 25th over to a score of 135 runs.

Shakib Al Hasan had dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama in that over, and the next man in, Angelo Mathews, leisured his way to the crease. He took his guard, and as he was adjusting his helmet, the strap broke. He immediately called for a new helmet.

As the 12th man was bringing out a new helmet for him, he was informed by the umpires that Bangladesh had appealed for a timed out, and he was given out. Matthews pleaded his case, showing the broken strap to the umpires and even to Shakib Al Hasan, but Bangladeshi captain refused to take the appeal back.

With this, Mathews became the first batter in international cricket to be dismissed on timed out.

Angelo Mathews rests his case with a new video of the timer by official broadcasters of his arrival at the crease

In his defense, Mathews shared a series of posts on social media containing video evidence that he was not at fault and instead that the officials and even Bangladeshi captain were wrong. The latest video shared showed Matthews coming onto the crease and the time it took for him to reach there with the timer.

It also showed Matthews with his foot grounded in the crease at approximately 1 minute, 54 seconds after the last batsman got out. According to ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 playing rules, the new batter must reach the crease within 2 minutes of the last player getting out.

I rest my case! Here you go you decide,” Mathews posted.
