Veteran Sri Lanka player Angelo Mathews has announced his retirement from test cricket. The Sri Lanka all-rounder will play his last test match next month. Mathew will quit the longest format of the game after the first test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in June 2025.
Angelo Mathews has represented Sri Lanka in the longest format for 16 years. He made his debut in July 2009 during a test series against Pakistan. He was also part of Sri Lanka’s home series against Australia in February this year.
Angelo Mathews has played a total of 118 tests for Sri Lanka so far during his long career. Mathews slammed 8167 runs across 210 innings at an average of 44.63. He also smacked 45 half-centuries and 16 centuries, including a double ton. He picked 33 wickets while bowling in 86 innings, with a best bowling show of 44/4.
Angelo Mathew to continue playing in white-ball formats
The Sri Lanka stalwart shared a post about his test retirement on his X (formerly Twitter). Although he has pulled down the curtains on his test career, he will be available for white-ball cricket.
“The past 17 years of playing cricket for Sri Lanka has been my highest honour and pride. I have given everything to cricket and cricket has given me everything in return and made me the person I am today”, he wrote.
“Whilst I bid adieu to the Test format, as discussed with selectors I will remain available for selection for the white ball format, if and when my country needs me,” the 37-year-old further added. Have a look at the post below.
Notably, Mathews is the third-highest run-getter for Sri Lanka in tests after Kumar Sangakkara (12,400) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814). During his last stint in the test series against Australia earlier this year, Mathew scored 125 runs in four innings with one half-century.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh test series will witness two games. The first test will commence on June 17 in Galle. The second test will begin on June 5 in Colombo. The multi-format campaign will also witness an ODI and T20I series.
