The fans often refer DRS as “Dhoni Review System” because of MS Dhoni’s scary accuracy with his reviews.

MS Dhoni can become a good umpire, given his scary accuracy with his DRS calls, feels Indian umpire Anil Chaudhary in a podcast.

Because of MS Dhoni’s uncanny consistency in determining whether an on-field decision should be referred to the TV umpire, social media users frequently playfully alter the Decision Review System (DRS) to the ‘Dhoni Review System’ after he nails the call.

And it’s a skill that the former India captain honed through experience, with his teammates sometimes blindly relying on his judgment.

And Anil Chaudhary, the experienced Indian international umpire, has said that while achieving 100 percent accuracy in DRS calls is unrealistic. However, MS Dhoni comes very close to achieving complete accuracy in the review system.

“He’s (Dhoni) close to accuracy. Lot of the times he stops others from appealing. He can become a good umpire provided he’s ready to be inside the ground for seven hours,” Chaudhary said on Shubhankar Mishra podcast.

A very notable example of Dhoni’s amazing accuracy with DRS involves Anil Chaudhary himself. During an ODI between India and England in 2017, Chaudhary had given Yuvraj Singh out caught behind, as the batter chased a wide full ball. Even before Yuvraj could discuss taking DRS, MS Dhoni, at the non-striker’s end, had made the signal for DRS review.

The replays then showed that Yuvraj’s bat hadn’t hit the ball, which he bounced after pitching and was then collected by keeper Jos Buttler.

“Rishabh Pant has also improved a lot”- Anil Chaudhary says keepers make the best judgement in DRS

Apart from MS Dhoni, very few Indian wicket-keepers have gotten the DRS judgment right. However, Anil Chaudhary spoke of Rishabh Pant, saying that the young keeper has improved a lot from his early days.

Chaudhary also said that wicket-keepers have a unique perspective that allows them to observe the game’s complexities and make smart decisions.

“Rishabh Pant has also improved a lot from earlier days. It’s all about experience – you look at the replays and then reassess your calls. The wicketkeeper has got the best spot to keep an eye on, they’re still and can follow the ball’s trajectory. In fact, best umpires sometimes base their decisions on the movement of wicketkeepers because they follow the ball,” he said.
