Arshdeep Singh has now become India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is.
Arshdeep Singh made history on January 22, 2024, by becoming India‘s leading wicket-taker in T20Is. He achieved this remarkable milestone during the first T20I of the five-match series against England at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Bowling first, the southpaw gave India a superb start by removing both England openers within the first three overs. He struck in the first over, dismissing Phil Salt with an out-swinging short ball that was caught behind by Sanju Samson.
In his second over, he had Ben Duckett caught by Rinku Singh on the off-side via a leading edge. Other Indian bowlers capitalized on the brilliant start by Arshdeep and bowled with discipline, dismissing England for 132 runs. Varun Chakravarthy starred for the hosts, claiming three wickets in his four-over spell.
Arshdeep now has 97 T20I wickets, surpassing Yuzvendra Chahal‘s tally of 96 to become India’s highest wicket-taker in the format. He has achieved this remarkable milestone at an impressive average of just 17, a figure that ranks third only behind Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah (among Indians with over 50 T20I wickets).
Speaking to BCCI TV after the game, Arshdeep expressed his gratitude at reaching the milestone, sharing that he feels satisfied seeing his hard work pay off.
The speedster also highlighted the crucial role of Varun Chakravarthy, acknowledging how the spinner’s impact on the Indian team has made the pacers’ job easier.
A funny moment came towards the end of the interview when Arshdeep playfully held his ears and said, “Sorry Yuzi bhai,” jokingly apologizing to Chahal for surpassing his wicket tally.
