Rain briefly interrupted the play during 2nd match of Asia Cup 2023 between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Co-hosts Sri Lanka have started their title defence in Asia Cup at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. Defending champions Sri Lanka are taking on Bangladesh. Sri Lankan fans were awaiting this big clash between two Asian teams, and crowds have also gathered in large numbers to witness the fierce rivalry that’s been building between these two teams in recent years. The delayed monsoon in Sri Lanka is a concern for the SLC and everyone with the expectation of great cricketing action in the country. As expected, the rain came in to disrupt the proceedings in Kandy.

In the 17th over, the umpires had to call in the covers, but they were removed soon as the rain stopped within two minutes. According to Weather.com, there are chances of multiple short rain disruptions in Kandy on Thursday. Weather.com data shows the precipitation point hovering around 43-51% during the game. It was a 3 PM start in Sri Lanka, and the rain prediction goes till 10 PM in the late evening. The temperature is likely to remain around 22°C to 28°C, and due to the heavy cloud cover, humidity is expected to be above 95% throughout the action time.
Immediately after the drinks break in the first innings, covers were called in as the showers were getting stronger and to secure the playing area and parts of the outfield, the umpires called in covers quickly. But as soon as covers came on the ground, players didn’t even reach the boundary line, and the rain suddenly stopped. The umpires then decided to resume the action at Pallekele Cricket Stadium. The big India vs Pakistan clash is also scheduled in Kandy on Saturday, there is a rain prediction on that day as well. Sri Lanka are going to host nine games in the tournament, including the finals on September 17.
Bangladesh captain Shakib al-Hasan won the toss and elected to bat first. Sri Lanka brought in their wicket-taking off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana in the 2nd over. Theekshana, without disappointment, got opener Tanzid Hasan plumb in front. Bangladesh are under pressure as they have lost three wickets in the first 20 overs. Shakib Al Hasan was dismissed by Matheesha Pathirana. wicket-keeper Kusal Mendis plucked a great catch to dismiss Bangladesh’s premier batsman. Mushfiqur Rahim has been shifted to the finisher role in the Bangladesh batting order.
