Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan by 89 runs in the 4th match of Asia Cup 2023.

Bangladesh have an emphatic win over Afghanistan at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore to mark themselves safe from the knockout punch. An all-round performance from batters and bowlers helped Bangladesh defeat Afghanistan by a huge margin of 89 runs, and to stay in the hunt for Super 4 round in the Asia Cup 2023.

Batting first, Bangladesh scored 334 runs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz (112) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (104) smashed centuries to set the platform for their team. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul added 194 runs for the 3rd wicket before Mehidy walked out due to an injury. Later on, captain Shakib (32) and Mushfiqur Rahim (25) cameos put them in a strong position.

Afghanistan chase couldn’t be taken as their top-order was too cautious with their approach while chasing 335. They were bundled out on 245 runs as Taskin Ahmed (3 wickets) and Shoriful Islam (4 wickets) picked up 7 wickets among each other.

Group B is the most unpredictable one in the Asia Cup 2023 as all three teams have almost equal chances of qualifying for the next round. Bangladesh after losing their opening game against Sri Lanka, have made a comeback and earned 2 important points after decimating Afghanistan. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh both have 2 points each, with Sri Lanka still left with one more game. Sri Lanka with a better net run rate are positioned number one in Group B table, while Bangladesh are 2nd. Afghanistan still have a chance to qualify as they are scheduled to play Sri Lanka next in their league game at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Group B is still open as any team can qualify or move out of the tournament.

Bangladesh top order batter Najmul Hossain Shanto is in red-hot form in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. Shanto after scoring 89 against Sri Lanka, has now smashed a century against Afghanistan. Shanto with these two innings has become the leading run-scorer with 193 runs in two innings. Shanto scored 104 runs against Afghanistan. Pakistan captain Babar Azam has moved down to second place with 151 runs. Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz also smashed a century along with Shanto and placed himself as 3rd leading run-scorer in the list with 117 runs. Another centurion in the tournament, Iftikhar Ahmed is 4th with 109 runs, and Hardik Pandya is 5th with 87 runs under his name.

The bowling tally remains unchanged from the last game as no bowler from either team could gain big from Sunday’s encounter. Shaheen Afridi is the leading wicket-taker in the Asia Cup 2023 as he has got 6 wickets in 2 games. Shaheen rattled the Indian top-order on Saturday and sent Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli back into the hut early. His teammate Haris Rauf is 2nd in the list with 5 wickets in 2 games. Haris was also at his best against India. Sri Lanka's Matheesha Pathirana is 3rd in this list with 4 wickets. Pathirana picked up 4 wickets against Bangladesh. Two Pakistanis with 4 wickets each remain at 4th and 5th position, Naseem is 4th and Shadab Khan is 5th in the list.
