KL Rahul made his return to Indian team replacing injured Shreyas Iyer after a prolonged injury lay off.

Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 stage match against Pakistan owing to a back spasm he suffered just before the match was to begin in Colombo on September 10, 2023.

The captain Rohit Sharma announced that wicket-keeper-batter KL Rahul will replace Shreyas in the playing XI for the game against Pakistan. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah also made a return to the team following the birth of his son.

Babar Azam, Pakistan captain won the toss and revealed that the Men in Green were playing with the same XI that played against Bangladesh in the previous Super 4s encounter in Lahore.

After a protracted absence due to a back ailment sustained after the fourth test of the Border Gavaskar trophy in India in March 2023, Shreyas made his return to the team just before the Asia Cup this year.

Iyer underwent surgery for a slipped disc, which caused him to miss the IPL 2023 for the Kolkata Knight Riders as well as every international match from March to September.

Iyer participated in the first two games of the current Asia Cup, scoring 14 against Pakistan before getting removed by Haris Rauf for attempting to draw a short delivery.

Team Sheet shows that Shreyas Iyer suffered an actual injury

As a result, KL Rahul will return from a prolonged injury absence, and Ishan Kishan will continue to keep wickets for the squad. The injury has prevented Rohit & Co. from having to make the difficult choice of whether to add KL Rahul back to the starting lineup at the expense of an effective Ishan Kishan.

“Shreyas Iyer just got a back spasm so KL Rahul comes in for him,” Rohit Sharma confirmed at the toss on Sunday.

Also, the Indian team sheet was shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which showed that KL Rahul was not part of the Indian XI for the Pakistan match originally and Shreyas Iyer was scheduled to bat at no.4.

However, their positions were swapped with Rahul being drafted at the no.4 spot in the batting lineup and Iyer missing out, which confirmed that the Mumbai batter suffered the niggle right before the toss happened.
