Ravi Ashwin retired from international cricket on 18 December 2024.

In a shocking development, Indian off-spinner Ravi Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket on December 18, 2024. The off-spinner confirmed his decision while addressing the post-match press conference with captain Rohit Sharma after the completion of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 test at the Gabba.

Speaking to the media after the game, Ravi Ashwin said, “This will be my last day as an Indian cricket in all formats of the game at the international level. I do feel there is a bit of punch left in me in as a cricketer. I would like to showcase that in club-level cricket.

Following his retirement announcement, a series of emotional tributes have flooded social media, with many fans expressing that the Indian legend deserved a chance to captain the test side.

Many Australian cricketers have also displayed their admiration for legendary off spinner.

Speaking to Fox Cricket, Ravi Ashwin’s long-time rival Nathan Lyon praised his incredible skillset and remarked that he has nothing but respect for him.

Lyon said, “Nothing but respect (for Ashwin). Just the way Ash has conducted himself on and off the field for a number of years now, and his skill set is incredible. We’ve got different opinions on different things, there’s no right or wrong. But to have those conversations with a bowler like Ashwin is amazing.”

Star Australian pacer Mitchell Starc emphasized that Ashwin has been a thorn for Australia in recent years.

Congratulations on his career. I mean, he’s always been a bit of a thorn in the flesh for our side over in India and played a part in in series here in Australia. So yeah, it’s been a fantastic career and I’m sure it’ll be celebrated that way,” Starc told SEN Sports.

Australia captain Pat Cummins while speaking to reporters after the game hailed Ashwin as one of the all-time greats.

Cummins said, “He’s obviously been a fantastic player all around the world — there aren’t that many finger spinners that have that kind of longevity, He’ll go down as one of the all-time greats. There’s a massive respect from our change room for the career that he’s had.
