Australia announced a 18-member preliminary squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.

In a big setback for the Australian cricket team ahead of the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, pace bowler Jhye Richardson has been ruled out of preliminary World Cup squad. Jhye Richardson has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury which he found back in January 2023 and is still recovering from the same.

Due to which he found no place in Australia’s limited-overs tour of South Africa before the World Cup. Australia announced a preliminary squad for their preparatory tour of India and South Africa. Marnus Labuschagne also has been dropped from the Australian squad.

Australia selector George Bailey provides update on Jhye Richardson

Australian chief selector George Bailey gave an update regarding Jhye Richardson’s selection in the team and his injury. Bailey said, “He’s really keen to get this right, and if that means taking a little bit of time at the start of this summer, then we are happy to do that, and Jhye’s happy to do that. So it’ll be a more calculated build for him as we go.” Bailey is not sure about the date of Jhye Richardson’s comeback, but he confirmed that things and improvements are going well with Richardson. As quoted by Fox Sports, Bailey said, “Things are going well.”

Richardson hasn’t played a game after the Big Bash League since January 4, 2023, for Perth Scorchers. Richardson had to skip the limited-overs series against India in March, and Nathan Ellis had to call in as a replacement just a few days before the start of the series. He also skipped the Indian Premier League for  Mumbai Indians due to his injury. It is kind of a deja-vu situation for Australia, and it looks like a repeat of the 2019 World Cup for them concerning Jhye Richardson and his injury problems.

Jhye Richardson was seen as a key Australian pacer for the World Cup 2019, but he had to miss the event due to a shoulder injury. Since then, he has played only three ODI games for Australia as his career has been hit by multiple injuries. Australia will begin their preparatory tour to South Africa on August 30. They will play three T20Is and five ODIs. After this series, they will take on India in a 3-match ODI series. Australia will play their first two World Cup games against India in Chennai and South Africa in Lucknow, respectively.
