Meanwhile, England won the toss in the fifth test in Sydney and Ben Stokes chose to bat first. Notably, this test match is the final outing for Australia batter Usman Khawaja, who announced his retirement from international cricket in an explosive press conference.

England lost their top three batters for cheap, being reduced to 57/3. However, Joe Root and Harry Brook brought England back in the game. Root ended day one on 72* with eight boundaries, while Brook was on 78* with six fours and one six to his name. The duo have added 154 unbeaten runs for the fourth wicket as England ended day one on 211/3.

The morning sessions of day two of the fifth and final test will begin at 5 AM IST and last two hours, till 7 AM IST on Monday, January 5. This will be followed by a 40-minute lunch break. The second session will begin at 7:40 AM IST and continue until 9:40 AM IST. The tea break will last 20 minutes, after that. The concluding sessions on Day 2 at SCG will run from 10 AM. to 12 PM. IST. An extra 30 minutes is allowed to cover the daily quota of overs.
