Australia dethrone India to become No. 1 ranked ICC test team

India have lost the No. 1 spot in ICC rankings for test teams following test series against South Africa.
Australia have dethroned India from their long held top position in the ICC Test team rankings to be crowned as new No. 1 ranked test side. India’s recent series against South Africa, which ended in 1-1 draw, cost them a few rating points, for which, they’ve not lost the top spot to Australia.
Australia’s held the top spot in ICC Test team rankings for a brief period following their victory in the ICC World Test Championship Final 2023 against India, where they secured their first WTC mace after defeating the subcontinent giants by 209 runs. This achievement marked the commencement of Australia’s dominance, and their recent performance at home against Pakistan solidified their return to the top in test cricket.
Australia regain top spot in ICC test rankings
Prior to the rankings update, both India and Australia were evenly matched with a rating of 118 each. Despite being par, India had the edge due to accumulated points, maintaining their stronghold on the top spot across formats in the Men’s team rankings. However, with India drawing the two-test match series against South Africa 1-1, while Australia clinched victories in both matches against Pakistan. This shift allowed Pat Cummins-led side to reclaim their position as the No. 1 test team.

Australia’s success in the ICC World Test Championship final, coupled with their victory in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, shows a remarkable picture of their cricketing capabilities in the past year. The dynamic team, led by Cummins, has consistently delivered outstanding performances, breaking records and setting new standards on the international stage.
As the ongoing third test between Australia and Pakistan carries on and the upcoming five-match test series between India and England looms over, the test team rankings remain in irregularity. The battle for the top spot intensifies, with crucial ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 points at stake. The outcome of these matches will undoubtedly shape the rankings.
