Matthew Wade to replace injured Glenn Maxwell on the South Africa tour ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023.

Australia are on a white-ball tour of South Africa ahead of the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Both teams will play three T20Is and five ODI matches. The tour will start with the first of three T20Is on August 30 in Durban. Australia have already reached South Africa and kicked off their training camp. Australia have given rest to their senior players in the T20I series to keep them fresh for the ODIs.

Star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will be leading the T20I side, while all seniors will be back in the ODI series, starting on September 7 at Bloemfontein. Pat Cummins will be leading the ODI team. That series will be pretty important for Australia in order to prepare for the coming World Cup in India. But ahead of the start of the T20I series, the Australian suffered a major blow as all-rounder Glenn Maxwell sustained an ankle injury.

Maxwell suffered an ankle injury during the first training session in Durban. Though, according to the report from ESPN Cricinfo, the injury has been termed “a minor aggravation to the left ankle,” with the World Cup coming up, the Australian team doesn’t want to take any risk. Notably, Maxwell was already on leave from the ODI series because of the birth of his first child.

Tony Dodemaide, the Australian selector, said in a statement, “We are taking a precautionary approach. We will monitor Maxwell’s recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India ahead of the World Cup.” Veteran keeper Matthew Wade will replace him, who played for London Spirit in the recently concluded the Hundred.

Earlier, Wade was dropped from the squad in order to give young keeper Josh Inglish the long run. Wade was planning to retire from international cricket last year after the 2022 T20 World Cup but stepped back. As a result, chairman of the selection committee George Bailey confirmed that he is in contention for the next World Cup in 2024, to be played in West Indies and US.
