Australia legend denies offer to take over as India's head coach by replacing Gautam Gambhir

Under Gautam Gambhir, India suffered two whitewashes in Test series at home in two years.
An Australian bowling legend has declined a fan’s offer to become the head coach of the Indian team across formats and replace Gautam Gambhir at the helm, particularly in the Test format, when the Shubman Gill-led side has struggled.
Following consecutive home whitewash Test series defeats to South Africa and New Zealand, the Indian Test team is struggling in the longest format of the sport.
In limited-overs cricket, India have been performing remarkably well under Gambhir, winning the Asia Cup T20I edition and the ICC Champions Trophy in undefeated runs. However, this is not the case in Test cricket. India have only won seven Test matches, lost ten, and drawn two during his leadership.
In terms of the series record, legends Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin had to hang up their whites after back-to-back losses against Australia (a 1-3 Border-Gavaskar Trophy loss away from home) and New Zealand (a 2-0 series victory against Bangladesh at home).
Jason Gillespie straight away declines to become India’s head coach

Former Pakistan coach Jason Gillespie has categorically refused to replace Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian test team.
The former Australian fast bowler responded casually in two words to a Pakistani fan who advised that, in light of India’s recent Test problems, the former player take up coaching.
A Pakistani social media user asked former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie to coach the Indian cricket team while he was talking with fans on X. The person claimed that the Indian squad had lost two home whitewashes in a single year against South Africa and New Zealand.
However, Gillespie disassociated himself from the fictitious offer and declined to take over as head coach of Team India in place of Gautam. The former cricket player casually said, “No thanks.”
As the head coach of the Pakistani Test squad, Jason had a chaotic tenure. In April 2024, he was appointed head coach of the national red-ball team; however, under his leadership, the Pakistan team suffered a shocking 0-2 Test series defeat at home against Bangladesh.
However, after leading Pakistan to a historic series victory, former cricketer Aaqib Javed took over as the head coach of the Pakistan Test team following Gillespie’s resignation in December 2024.
Is the BCCI considering different coaches for different formats of the game?
Yes, BCCI is now open to opting for different coaches for red-ball and white-ball.
