Australia played their first day-night test match against New Zealand in 2015.

The day-night test was introduced in 2015 to add excitement among the fans and attract larger crowds in the stands and on the television screen. Due to the visibility issues with the red ball in the evening session, the day-night test matches are played with a pink ball.

The first-ever pink-ball test was played between Australia and New Zealand at the Adelaide Oval, marking the beginning of a new tradition in the longest format of the game.

The pink-ball tests bring unique challenges to players. The pink ball, used instead of the conventional red ball, behaves differently under lights. The ball generally swings more during the evening sessions making batting a lot harder.

From the bowling perspective, the ball offers more swing and seam movement. Although it spins less than the red ball, the extra bounce on offer helps the spinners.

Australia have played the most day-night test among all nations. On that note let’s take a look at how the Aussies have fared in those games.

Australia’s record in day-night test matches:

Australia boast an exceptional record in day-night tests. They have played 12 day-night tests so far, winning 11 of them while suffering defeat in just one.

What makes their record even more impressive is the fact that their victories have come against different opposition including – India, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies.

Australia defeated New Zealand in the first-ever day-night test in Adelaide in 2015 by three wickets. The most remarkable win for the Aussies in the pink ball test came against India in 2020 where they bundled out the Asian Giants for the score of just 36 in the second innings.

Australia suffered their first defeat in the pink ball test against West Indies in 2024 in Brisbane when Shamar Joseph dismantled the Aussie batting lineup to secure a thrilling eight-run win for the visitors.
