Australian captains to win the ICC U19 World Cup title
Australia have won the ICC U19 World Cup four times.
Australia are one of the most successful sides in cricket. When we peep into their trophy cabinet, winning an ICC title looks like of the easiest job in the game. Australian men’s cricket team has won six ODI Cricket World Cups, four ICC U19 World Cups, two ICC Champions Trophies, one T20 World Cup and one ICC World Test Championship in their history.
When it comes to U19 World Cup, Australia are the second most successful side in the history of the tournament. Australia have so far clinched four ICC U19 World Cup titles. Only India have won more titles (6) than Australia. Australia won the inaugural edition in 1988 and then won their second U19 title in 2002. They won their third U19 World Cup title in 2010. Let’s have a look at captains who led Australia to a U19 World Cup title.
List of Australian captains to win ICC U19 World Cup:
1. Geoff Parker – 1988:
Australia won the inaugural edition of the ICC U19 World Cup in 1988. Former South Australian cricketer Geoff Parker captained the Australia U19 side to title victory in 1988. Australia defeated Pakistan in the final at Adelaide Oval to win the title. Geoff Parker represented South Australia and Victoria in domestic cricket and played 37 First Class matches and 28 List-A matches, but he could never represent senior men’s Australian cricket team in his career.
2. Cameron White – 2002:
Former Australian all-rounder Cameron White was Australia’s second U19 World Cup title-winning skipper. Cameron White-led side defeated South Africa in the final at Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln to lift the fourth edition of the tournament. White went on to represent senior men’s Australian cricket team in four tests, 91 ODIs and 47 T20Is. He captained senior men’s Australian cricket team in one ODI and six T20Is later in his career.
3. Mitchell Marsh – 2010:
Australia’s third ICC U19 World Cup title win came in 2010 when they were captained by Mitchell Marsh. Marsh-led side defeated Pakistan in the final of the tournament at Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln to lift the title. Marsh is currently an active cricketer in Australia’s senior men’s side and has so far represented the team in 40 tests, 89 ODIs and 50 T20Is.
4. Hugh Weibgen – 2024:
Australia’s fourth ICC U19 World Cup title win came in 2024 when they were captained by Hugh Weibgen. They defeated India U19 in the final to lift the trophy fourth time. Australia U19 defeated India U19 by 80 runs in the title clash of 2024 edition of the tournament. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Australia posted the highest-ever total in ICC U19 World Cup final history – 253/7. They bowled out India for 174 to win the game by 79 runs.
