BBL 2025-26 will begin on 14th December, and Australian test players will be available for the fag end of the tournament.
With the Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26 season fixture announcement on Thursday (July 3), Cricket Australia (CA) is hopeful that the forthcoming season could be among the best because Australia’s test players will have a rare, uninterrupted two-week window to participate in the T20 league after the home Ashes series.
Three days before the third Ashes test between Australia and England begins in Adelaide, the Perth Scorchers will host the Sydney Sixers on December 14 to kick off BBL 2025-26 season.
The tournament will conclude on Sunday night before the Australia Day public holiday on January 26. The 40-game regular season will conclude on January 18, and the finals will take place on January 25.
Australia’s test players to be available for the fag end of the BBL 2025-26
Australia’s test players should be available for the final 10 days of the regular season as the fifth Ashes test in Sydney takes place from January 4 to January 8. After a taxing five-test series, it is more likely that only a few batters will be available.
However, the BBL is still hopeful that some of the bowlers and all-rounders will participate to get ready for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in February. The players themselves and CA’s top-performing squad will ultimately decide when they are available, though.
Compared to the previous three years, when Australia’s test assignments were in late January and early February, limiting the number of competitive matches that test players could play, this is a huge improvement.
“Pretty strong season”- BBL chief Alastair Dobson on Australia Test players’ participation
Alistair Dobson, the BBL head, was hopeful that this season would rank among the greatest in the league’s history.
“We earmarked this season from a while back. Anything we do around the international summer is huge. But then to have a good, clear run of nights available from mid-December through to the end of January, where we can play the BBL every night, is one that adds up to a pretty strong season for us.
Inevitably, at other times, some things don’t allow that, whether it’s different scheduling of Test matches, whether it’s the Australian team having content at the end of the summer, which might restrict potentially the availability of some of our Test players and Australian players. So all those things in the mix this year give us confidence this is as good a year as we’ve had almost ever,” Dobson stated as per ESPNCricinfo.
With the aim that the test players would be able to play both at home during that week and in the finals, the schedule has been crafted to provide every side a home match in the last week of the season.
However, several other test players, like as the three fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Pat Cummins, are not currently under contract. Cameron Green hasn’t played in the BBL since January 2020, while Travis Head is also uncontracted after not appearing in any games for the Adelaide Strikers.
The BBL has opted not to play games on Christmas Eve (December 24) or Christmas Day (December 25) and will not play a game on Australia Day (January 26).
