Shakib Al Hasan last represented Bangladesh in October during the test series against India.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced their 15-player squad on Monday, January 13, for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to take place in Pakistan and Dubai from February 19.
Bangladesh are in Group A with hosts Pakistan, India, and New Zealand. They will begin their campaign against India on February 20 in Dubai.
Bangladesh have made bold decisions in their selection, leaving out veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and experienced wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das.
Litton’s exclusion comes after a series of low scores, with no half-century in his last 13 innings. The 30-year-old has been dismissed for single-digit scores six times in his last seven innings.
Shakib Al Hasan, on the other hand, has been left out following his suspension from bowling in top-level cricket because of an illegal action. He recently failed a second independent assessment of his action in Chennai. Missing out on the Champions Trophy squad will likely be the end of Shakib’s ODI career.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto is among the several players making a return to the squad, including Mushfiqur Rahim, Towhid Hridoy, and Mustafizur Rahman. Shanto had missed the West Indies tour in November last year due to a hamstring injury.
Bangladesh will look to replicate their impressive run in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, where they reached the semi-final. They were eventually knocked out by India in the semi-final, losing by nine wickets.
Bangladesh ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad:
Najmul Hossain Shanto (C), Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Towhid Hridoy, Soumya Sarkar, Tanzid Hasan, Mahmudullah, Jaker Ali, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Parvez Hossain, Nasum Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan, Nahid Rana.
Bangladesh group stage schedule:
20 February – Bangladesh vs India, Dubai
24 February – Bangladesh vs New Zealand, Rawalpindi
27 February – Pakistan vs Bangladesh, Rawalpindi
