Two batsmen have scored more than 2500 test runs against India.

The India Cricket Team are among the oldest and top test-playing nations. India have a great dominance in their home soil in tests, and other teams find it extremely challenging to defeat them.

India have not only produced great batters, but also some of the greatest bowlers. Despite that, some of the opposition batters have dominated Indian bowlers and have scored loads of runs off them in the longest format of the game.

If we look at the top run-scorers against India in test cricket, eight have scored more than 2000 runs. Out of these, two have piled up more than 2500 runs. On that note, let’s take a look at the top five batsmen with most test runs against India.

5. Clive Lloyd – 2344

Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd grabs the fifth spot on this list. The former left-handed batsman played 28 tests against India during his career, scoring 2344 runs in 44 innings at an average of 58.60. Lloyd slammed seven centuries and 12 half-centuries, including a top knock of unbeaten 242* in an encounter in 1975 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

4. Steve Smith – 2356

Australia stalwart Steve Smith has mustered 2356 runs in 24 tests against India. At a spectacular batting average of 58.90 across 46 innings, Smith has hammered 11 centuries and five fifties. His highest individual score against India in test cricket, 192, came in December 2014 during a clash at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium.

3. Alastair Cook – 2431

Former England skipper Alastair Cook played 30 tests against India during his career. The left-handed batsman scored 2431 runs in 54 innings at an average of 47.66. With a top knock of 294, Cook smacked seven centuries and nine fifties against India.

Notably, Cook made his test debut and also played his last test against India. He hit hundreds in both of the games.

2. Ricky Ponting – 2555

Australia batting legend Ricky Ponting is another successful batsman against India in tests. From 1996 to 2012, Ponting faced India in 29 tests. At a stunning average of 54.36, the right-handed batsman slammed 2555 runs in 51 innings. The former Australia captain registered eight centuries and 12 half-centuries, including a top knock of 257 runs.

England batsman Joe Root steals the top spot on this list. The right-handed batsman has mustered 3000* runs in 33 tests against India at an average of over 57. The former England captain, who is the only batter to score over 3000 test runs against India, has also slammed ten tons and 13 fifties across 60 innings. In February 2021, Root delivered his best batting show against India, scoring a 218-run knock at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
