Ashes over the years has seen an enthralling contest between Australia Cricket Team and England Cricket Team.

The Ashes cricket rivalry started in 1882 with Australia beating England for the first time in a Test match at The Oval. It was then that British newspaper The Sporting Times published a mock obituary, mentioning the “ashes” being taken to Australia. Then it was in late 1882 to early 1883 that England captain Ivo Bligh led his side in Australia, vowing to reclaim the Ashes.

This was how the first seeds of the Ashes rivalry were sown. Since then, for over 140 years, the two teams have been fighting it out in every series to win the Ashes urn. Both teams put everything on the line when playing in this series to ensure that they end up winning or retaining the urn.

Before the start of this Ashes series, England and Australia played out 361 Test matches, with the Aussies winning 152 Tests while England won 112. Throughout this rivalry, there have been some incredible batting performances from both sides and in this article, we will take a look at the top five batters with the most runs in a single Ashes series.
