Sydney Thunder beat Brisbane Heat to record their first win of the BBL 15.

Finally, after two poor games in the Big Bash League 2025-26, the last edition’s runner-up, Sydney Thunder, opened their account on the points table. On Monday, the Thunder beat the two-time champions, the Brisbane Heat, in an exciting contest by 34 runs.

Brisbane Heat won the toss and elected to bowl first under an overcast sky. That decision didn’t go well for them. Sydney Thunder had a 127-run opening stand between Sam Konstas (63 off 45) and Matthew Gikes (76 off 48), and they each scored a fifty. Sam Billings (25 off 11) provided a much-needed finish, and the Thunder ended up at 193/4 in the first innings.

After chasing down 258 runs in the previous game against the Perth Scorchers, there were high hopes for them. But the last game centurion, Jack Wildermuth, got out for 14 off 15. Matt Renshaw still showed some fight and scored 43 off 28.

But it was Shadab Khan who changed the game. His 4/24 in the middle turned the tables in favor of the Sydney Thunder. That eventually helped them to win their first game of the season. Daniel Sams also bowled well for his 2/25.
