Hobart Hurricanes defeated Sydney Thunder by seven wickets to win BBL 2024-25.

Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 came to a conclusion on Monday, January 27 as Hobart Hurricanes defeated Sydney Thunders by seven wickets to clinch their maiden league title, ending 14-year-long wait.

The 14th season of Australia’s premier T20 league was full of drama featuring fierce contests between bat and ball. While youngsters like Mitchell Owen and Jason Sangha made an impact, veterans such as Steve Smith, David Warner, and Glenn Maxwell also glittered the crowd.

Hobart Hurricanes topped the league stage with 15 points from 10 games, followed by Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder with 14 and 12 points respectively. Melbourne Stars made a strong comeback, winning their last five games to secure fourth place.

Hurricanes defeated the Sixers in the Qualifier to qualify directly for the final, while the Thunder overcame the Stars and Sixers in the Knockout and Challenger to secure a place in the final.

In the final, Hobart Hurricanes started on the backfoot after winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Thunder were off to a strong start, looking set to post a big total with David Warner and Jason Sangha both settled at the crease after 10 overs. However, things took a turn when the Hurricanes’ captain Nathan Ellis struck twice, reducing Sydney from 97/0 to 97/2.

Ellis bowled excellently in the death overs, finishing with 3/23 from his quota of four overs. Thanks to a cameo from Chris Green, Thunder set a challenging target of 183 runs.

During the chase, the tournament’s leading run-scorer, Mitchell Owen, got off to a fantastic start, putting on 109 runs for the opening partnership with Caleb Jewell in just 7.2 overs! He reached his century in just 39 balls, joint-fastest in the BBL history, and finished with career-best of 108 runs off 42 balls.

Thanks to Owen’s century and Matthew Wade’s 32 runs, Hobart chased down the target in just 14.1 overs, clinching the BBL 2024-25 title.
