BCCI earns record revenue of ₹9,741.7 crore in FY24 thanks to IPL - Report

IPL remains the major revenue generator for the BCCI since its inception.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has reportedly proved to be the major cash cow for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as it recorded over INR 9000 crores of revenue, with the T20 league contributing more than 59%.

According to branding and ad giant Rediffusion, the BCCI produced ₹9,741.7 crore in revenue in FY23-24, alongside the IPL, which generated ₹5,761 crore, and expanding streams like the WPL and worldwide rights.

BCCI in 2007 discovered a golden goose—the IPL, which is now a 100 percent part of the BCCI. The tournament is the best, and media rights are constantly going up. IPL also ensures that players from the Ranji Trophy level get a playing field. IPL will continue to churn out profitability as it grows further,” said Lloyd Mathias, in a Rediffusion report.

He further added that the BCCI could help with increasing cricket’s popularity in other regions of the world as well, and help increase the revenue.

Along with the IPL, which brought in ₹5,761 crore, and expanding revenue streams like the WPL and global rights, the BCCI “has built a billion-rupee engine powered by fan love, smart deals, and cricketing excellence,” according to branding and ad giant Rediffusion, which reports that the BCCI made ₹9,741.7 crore in FY23–24.

Non-IPL media rights earn INR 361 crores for BCCI

However, the IPL is not the only contributor to the BCCI’s revenue. The report stated that BCCI earned ₹361 crore from non-IPL media rights, with income coming from broadcasting rights for international cricket matches and tournaments.

BCCI has immense potential to commercialize traditional formats like Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, or CK Nayudu Trophy to shore up non-IPL revenues. Moreover, the board has close to ₹30,000 crore in reserves, which brings in about ₹1,000 crore a year in interest alone. These revenues aren’t just sustainable—they are poised to grow 10–12 percent annually, thanks to expanding sponsorships, media deals, and matchday earnings,” said Sandeep Goyal, Chief of Rediffusion.

The report also stated that the ICC depends on the BCCI for the bulk of its funding and is failing to generate revenue as it should be.

But the same report stated that any interruption in the IPL could prove to be a huge loss to the BCCI. This year, the league was interrupted due to Operation Sindoor, when some events were briefly halted. But as per the report, the IPL performance remained “hunky-dory” despite the temporary halt.

“The point is, so what if IPL makes up the bulk of BCCI’s revenue? It’s just a portfolio of revenues; some do better, some do not,” the report stated.
