BCCI made the decision after the new Online Gaming Bill came into effect.
Indian Cricket Team will need to find a new jersey and title sponsor as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ended its INR 358 crores deal with fantasy gaming website Dream11. This happened after the passage of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025.
As per the new online gaming bill, regardless of whether an online money game is based on ability, chance, or a combination of both, the recently passed law forbids its offering, operation, or facilitation. It also includes a strong prohibition on the promotion and advertising of these games in all media.
The law also limits the financial activities associated with these games; banks and payment systems are specifically prohibited from handling payments for internet gaming.
The Information Technology Act of 2000 gives the act the authority to prevent access to illegal gaming platforms in order to bolster enforcement even more. It is believed that banks have already taken steps to prevent any avenue for transactions involving gambling organizations once it was put into place, thereby removing financial backing for these operations.
BCCI and Dream11 part ways, ending an INR 358 crore deal
The breakup between Dream11 and the BCCI was inevitable. Otherwise, it would have been unlawful to continue the sponsorship agreement, which was valued at INR 358 crores.
The BCCI has already announced the termination of the partnership.
“BCCI and Dream11are discontinuing their relationship after the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, was passed. BCCI will ensure not to indulge with any such organizations ahead in the future,” the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said.
It is acknowledged that both parties took the initiative to terminate the agreement. Since the new government rule forbids the promotion of fantasy gaming, Dream11 and the Indian cricket’s governing body needed to terminate the sponsorship. The corporation running the platform that promotes real money gaming also bears responsibility.
In 2023, the BCCI and Dream Sports, the parent business of Dream11, inked a three-year uniform sponsorship agreement.
Unless the BCCI finds a company within the next two weeks, the Indian team will be without a shirt sponsor as the Asia Cup approaches. On September 9, the Asia Cup begins in the United Arab Emirates.
