Jay Shah is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council.

In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is very likely to replace Greg Barclay as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), according to the latest reports. Shah is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

Notably, the ICC has confirmed that Greg Barclay has decided not to seek a third term and will step down from the post once his current term ends in November 2024. The new chairman will take charge from December 1, 2024.

The new chairman will hold a term of three years. Currently, the ICC Chairman’s term is two years. Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-appointed in November 2022.

The apex cricket council has outlined the timeline for the election process. In their board meeting, the ICC stated that current directors need to submit nominations for the next chairman by August 27, 2024, and if there is more than one candidate, then an election will be held.

“Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next Chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new Chair commencing on 1 December 2024,” the ICC said in a statement after its Board meeting.

Jay Shah is set to become the new ICC chairman without any election

According to a report in Cricbuzz, BCCI secretary Jay Shah is expected to become the new ICC chairman in December. The report further added that at least one candidate must file their nomination in order to have an election.

However, if Shah files a nomination, then it is unlikely anyone else would nominate themselves. Then, there will be no election and Shah will be elected.

“For the election to proceed, at least one additional candidate must enter the race and it’s not clear whether there will be a contest at all. It will depend on what Mr Jay Shah decides. If he files nomination, there will be no election. He will be elected unopposed,” said an ICC source.

Shah, though, has remained tight-lipped until now related to the developments surrounding his becoming the new ICC chairman.
