Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury while taking a catch of Alex Carey during the Sydney ODI.

Indian Cricket Team faced a massive blow during the third ODI against Australian Cricket Team at Sydney Cricket Stadium in Sydney on Saturday, October 25. Vice-captain Shreyas Iyer suffered an injury in the first innings as he took a stunning catch to remove Australia wicket-keeper Alex Carey.

In the 34th over, Harshit Rana bowled a short of the length delivery outside off, and Carey sliced it a long way in the air. Iyer ran from backward point and attempted a dive to grab a stunning catch. However, he fell on the ground and injured himself.

After the incident, Iyer was seen in pain and left the field with the team physio. It came a a big blow to the Men in Blue as the right-handed batter did not return to the field later.

Later, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provided a crucial update on Iyer’s injury on X (formerly Twitter). They mentioned that Iyer has sustained an injury to his left rib cage and has been taken to the hospital for further assessment.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury,” BCCI informed on X.

Last month, Iyer pulled out of the unofficial test series between India A and Australia A midway after featuring in the first game. He later informed BCCI that he is taking a break of six months from test cricket due to his lower-back issue, and was subsequently unavailable for the recent test series against West Indies at home.

Meanwhile, Iyer was appointed as the new vice-captain in ODIs ahead of India’s tour of Australia 2025. Like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, he returned to the national team after a long gap of seven months for the ODI series against Australia, having last played in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in March.

The 30-year-old got out cheaply for 11 runs in the first ODI in Perth, however, he made a powerful comeback with a half-century in the second game in Adelaide, smacking 61 runs. In the third ODI in Sydney, India didn’t need him to bat as they won the game by nine wickets, with Rohit (121*) and Kohli (74*) leading the team to victory with their impeccable knocks.
