Best Test XI of the year 2023
Australia defeated India in the finals to win the ICC World Test Championship in 2023.
The test cricket saw Australia becoming the new champions of the World Test Championship in 2023. Team India ended as the runners-up in yet another edition of the ICC WTC. Australia also retained the Ashes after drawing the series 2-2 in England, while India won the BGT series for the third time in a row.
All in all, it was an eventful year of test cricket, with some incredible performances throughout the years. We will talk about the best XI of the year 2023 in test cricket. This will include the best performers of the years who showed great consistency, irrespective of conditions and bowling attack.
Best test XI of the year 2023
1. Usman Khawaja :
Veteran Australian opener Usman Khawaja ended the year as the top-scorer. In fact, he is the only player to have scored more than 1,000 runs this year. He is also one of the reasons for Australia’s success in red-ball cricket. Khawaja made 1210 runs in 24 innings at an average of 52.60 with three hundreds and six half-centuries. He is the perfect opener for this team.
2. Zak Crawley :
With a player like Khawaja, you need someone who can take on the opposition. Hence, England’s opener, Zak Crawley, is a perfect choice for the second spot. The right-hander has been pretty consistent for England. He has scored runs, and that too at a rapid pace, which has always set the tone for his team. Crawley has scored 606 runs in 15 innings at an average and strike rate of 43.28 and 88.46, with one hundred and three half-centuries in 2023.
3. Kane Williamson :
Kane Williamson has also been superb for New Zealand in 2023 and has scored the most number of test centuries in 2023. The veteran star has done pretty well for his team and has been the backbone of Kiwi batting line-up. Williamson has played 13 innings and scored 695 runs at 57.91, including four tons and a best of 215.
4. Joe Root :
Joe Root has been the best test batter in the last couple of years. English batter is the second highest run-scorer for his country in this format and has become the most important part of the team in red-ball cricket. In 14 innings he has played, Root has scored 787 runs at an excellent average of 65.58, including two hundreds and five half-centuries.
5. Travis Head :
It has been a superb year for Travis Head with the impact he has had. He deserves to be at No. 5 spot. The left-hander smashed his highest score of 2023 (163) in the WTC final against India, which made a difference. Overall, he is the third-highest run-scorer in test cricket in 2023. Head has scored 919 runs at 41.77 in 12 matches, with one hundred and five half-centuries.
6. Alex Carey (Wk) :
Alex Carey has been a superb man for Australia behind the stumps and has done well with the bat and with gloves as well. The 32-year-old has been an important part of Australian team and played a few important knocks under pressure. Carey has played 20 innings and scored 461 runs with three half-centuries. He is the only wicket-keeper with 50+ dismissals made in the year 2023.
7. Ravindra Jadeja :
Ravindra Jadeja is the No. 1 ranked test all-rounder, and he has been one of the prime reasons that India are pretty hard to beat in any condition. The all-rounder has been superb for his team. In 9 innings, Jadeja has scored 281 runs at 35.12 and picked up 33 wickets at an average of 19.39 and a best of 7/42.
8. Ravi Ashwin :
Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravi Ashwin is another top bowler in test cricket in 2023. He ended the year as the third-highest wicket-taker. Ashwin has played 7 matches and taken 41 wickets at an average of 17.02. He has also taken four fifers with a best bowling figure of 7/71.
9. Pat Cummins (C) :
Australian captain Pat Cummins had the best year of his career. He led his country to win the WTC and World Cup 2023, and retained the Ashes, also defeated Pakistan in test series, and also grabbed a record-breaking deal in IPL. One can’t ask for much from a cricketer. He is the man to lead this side. Cummins has taken 42 wickets in 19 test innings with a best of 6/91.
10. Mitchell Starc :
One can say that Mitchell Starc is as good as he was at his peak. But when it comes to taking important wickets and wrapping up the tail, there are not many better bowlers than him. Hence, he is the perfect pacer for this team. Starc has taken 38 wickets in 16 innings, with a best of 5/78.
11. Stuart Broad :
Stuart Broad retired from international cricket after the conclusion of the Ashes 2023. But he certainly retired at the top of his career and took a wicket off the final ball he bowled in test cricket. Broad took 38 wickets in just 16 innings with a best of 5/51.
