Rohit Sharma stayed back in India for the birth of his second child and was blessed with a baby boy on November 15.
Rohit Sharma, the Indian team captain, is set to join the national team squad during the upcoming first test against Australia of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. The first test will begin at Perth’s Optus Stadium on November 22.
Rohit Sharma will miss India’s first test against Australia, which is slated to begin on Friday, November 22 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The Indian skipper is unavailable due to birth of his second child. In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah will captain India in the first test match.
The Indian squad flew to Australia in three batches between November 9 and 11, but Rohit stayed behind to attend the birth of his second child. Rohit was blessed with a newborn son on November 15th.
Since then, there has been much conjecture about whether Rohit Sharma will travel to Australia before the Perth Test.
Rohit Sharma might reach Australia and join Indian team on Sunday
While some sources stated he would arrive in Perth well before the first test, which begins on Friday (November 22), it was always obvious that he would delay his trip. Rohit Sharma had informed the BCCI that he needed more time with his wife after the birth of their second child.
According to a new report in Cricbuzz, Rohit has informed the appropriate officials at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he will join the squad on Sunday, November 24, the third day of the first test in Perth.
“I spoke with Rohit earlier. But I got a little bit of clarity on leading the side after coming in here,” Bumrah said in the press conference on the eve of the start of the Perth test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
Bumrah has captained the Indian team in test cricket only once before in Edgbaston against England in 2022. India lost that match by seven wickets as England chased down the 387-run target with Jonny Bairstow scoring twin tons in the match and Joe Root making 142* in the second innings.
