The Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) has emerged as one of the most iconic rivalries in test cricket. While the test cricket history between India and Australia dates back to 1947, the BGT was introduced in 1996.
Over the years, India have stamped their authority in this rivalry, winning the BGT trophy 10 times compared to Australia’s five.
Indians have dominated the Aussies in the past decade, winning the last four series, including two historic wins on Australian soil in 2018-19 and 2020-21. Indian batting lineup has played a key role in these triumphs while going toe-to-toe against the top-quality Australian bowling attack.
Many of these batsmen who played an integral role in India’s historic wins are set to return for the upcoming BGT 2024-25 series. On that note, let’s take a look at the top five Indian batsmen in the current squad with the most runs in Australia in test cricket.

5. Shubman Gill – 259 runs
The youngest player on this list is Shubman Gill, who made an immediate impact during his debut tour of Australia in 2020-21.
He scored 259 runs in the series, including a match-winning 91 in the second innings at Brisbane and played a pivotal role in India’s historic series victory.
With two half-centuries to his name in Australia, Gill will hold the key for the Indian batting lineup on the upcoming tour.
4. Ravichandran Ashwin – 384 runs
Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been India’s crisis man with the bat. The Indian all-rounder has scored 384 runs in Australia at a decent batting average of 24. He has toured Australia four times in his career.
His most remarkable innings came in Sydney in 2021 where he played out one full session with Hanuma Vihari to secure a famous draw for India.
3. Rohit Sharma – 408 runs
India’s current captain Rohit Sharma, who struggled to cement his place in the test squad till 2019, makes this list. Rohit has scored a total of 408 runs in Australia in test cricket at a batting average of 31.
He first toured Australia in 2014, where he played two test matches in Adelaide and Brisbane, making 81 runs in four innings. Sharma has hit three fifties in Australia, one each on his three tours.
2. Rishabh Pant – 624 runs
Regarded as India’s biggest match-winner with the bat in the current squad, Rishabh Pant has scored 624 runs in Australia at an average of 62.
Pant’s most memorable innings down under came at the Gabba in 2021 where he guided India to a historic test match and series win, breaking Australia’s unbeaten streak at the venue with his knock of 89*.
Additionally, he has also scored a century in Australia. Pant’s highest individual score of 159 came at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in 2019.
1. Virat Kohli – 1352 runs
Modern-day great Virat Kohli has scored the most runs in Australia in test cricket among the current Indian squad members. Kohli has amassed a total of 1352 runs in Australia at an excellent batting average of 54. His impressive record down under includes six centuries and four half-centuries.
His standout performance came during the 2014 series, where he scored 692 runs in eight innings, including twin centuries in Adelaide. His six centuries in Australia are also the joint most for any Indian batsman with Sachin Tendulkar.
