Jasprit Bumrah left the field during the second session of day 2 in the Sydney test.

The Indian cricket team was handed a huge scare on day 2 of the fifth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 test in Sydney when their captain and main man, Jasprit Bumrah, left the ground in the post-lunch session to get scans on an issue that kept him out of about half of Australia’s first innings.

A little after 2pm local time, Bumrah was seen leaving the Indian dressing room with the team doctor and a security officer. He took a car from the stadium and left the venue.

He bowled eight overs on day 2, adding on from the two overs in the last 15 minutes on day 1. He had dismissed Usman Khawaja on the last ball of day 1 and nipped out Marnus Labuschagne in his second over on day 2.

Bumrah bowled only one over after lunch on day 2 and left the field, with Virat Kohli taking over the captaincy duties for the time being.

Prasidh Krishna provides Jasprit Bumrah’s injury update:

Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna attended the post-day press conference on Saturday, where he revealed that Bumrah has back spasms and went for scans. Krishna said the medical team is monitoring Bumrah.

“Yes, he had a back spasm. He had gone for scans. The medical team is monitoring him. So we will know whenever the medical team gets back to us,” Krishna said.

India would be pleased that the other pacers stepped up in the absence of Bumrah at the SCG. Siraj and Krishna both took three wickets each, while Nitish Kumar Reddy bagged a brace. Siraj dismissed Sam Konstas and Travis Head in the same over, while Krishna got rid of Steve Smith, Beau Webster, and Alex Carey.

Their collective effort helped India gain a slender four-run lead, reducing the match to effectively an innings shoot-out. At stumps, India are 141/6, courtesy of Rishabh Pant’s 61 (33).

India would be hoping that Bumrah’s back spasms doesn’t prevent him from bowling in Australia’s second innings. On this tour, Bumrah has bowled 152.1 overs in nine innings, taking 32 wickets at 13.06.
