KL Rahul scored 24 runs in India’s first innings in the fourth test.

Australia have dominated the proceedings on the second day of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) test in Melbourne.

Building on their overnight score of 311/6, Steve Smith and Pat Cummins stitched together a crucial 112-run partnership, to power the hosts past the 400-run mark in the first innings.

Steve Smith carried his sublime form to register his 34th test century. With this knock, he has set a new record for the most centuries in the BGT, taking his tally to 10. The visitors finally dismissed the Aussies for a daunting total of 474 runs in the first innings.

Interestingly, the Indian management opted to disrupt the successful opening partnership of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, with captain Rohit Sharma stepping in to replace the right-hander. However, the change didn’t work out, as the Indian captain managed just three runs in the first innings.

A lighthearted moment in the game came when Rahul walked in to bat at No. 3. Using the opportunity for some cheeky banter, Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon asked KL, “What did you do wrong to bat one down?”

At the time of writing India have recovered to 105/2. Yashasvi Jaiswal (55*) and Virat Kohli (20*) are at the crease for the visitors. India will look to post a big first-innings total to get close to Australia’s score. With the Melbourne pitch expected to deteriorate on days 4 and 5, any target above 200 could prove to be challenging to chase.
