Nitish Kumar Reddy scored his maiden test hundred in the fourth BGT 2024-25 test in Melbourne.

India have recovered well to give themselves an outside chance of saving the Boxing Day test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 in Melbourne.

Starting the day at 164/5, India were in deep trouble, struggling to avoid the follow-on. However, their decision to play three batting all-rounders proved to be an effective ploy, with Washington Sundar scoring a half-century and Nitish Kumar Reddy bringing up his maiden test century.

Nitish’s excellent knock included 10 fours and a six. He formed a 127-run partnership with Sundar, helping India surpass the 350-run mark in their first innings.

What makes his innings remarkable is that despite coming to the crease under pressure, Nitish initially took on the Australian bowlers and didn’t allow them to get on top of him.

A heartwarming moment came when he reached his maiden test century. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as the crowd became deeply involved, especially with India on the brink of being bowled out at nine wickets down.

In a wholesome moment, Nitish’s father, Mutyala Reddy, stood up and emotionally celebrated his son’s remarkable achievement.

Reacting to the incredible moment, Mutyala Reddy told the broadcasters, “For our family, it’s a special day and we cannot forget this day in our life. He has been performing well since the age group of 14-15 and now in international cricket, it’s a very special feeling.

He also acknowledged that he was feeling very tense when Nitish was on 99 and India had only one wicket remaining.

He said, “I was very tensed. Only the last wicket was remaining. Thankfully Siraj managed to survive.”

At stumps on day 3, India are 358/9, trialing by 116 more runs.
