Rohit Sharma has only scored 31 runs in the ongoing BGT 2024-25.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has become a topic of debate among the fans. The 37-year-old has been struggling with form recently and appears to be a shadow of his former self.
2024 was a year to forget for Rohit Sharma. The Indian captain managed 619 runs from 26 innings, averaging 24.76.
His poor form, which began during the home test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, has continued into the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, where he has managed just 31 runs in five innings.
Rohit has particularly struggled against Pat Cummins, who has dismissed him four out of five times. His inclusion has disrupted the team’s balance, forcing KL Rahul to shuffle his batting position and leaving Shubman Gill out of the playing XI in Melbourne.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri has now shared his views on Rohit’s future in test cricket.
Ravi Shastri on Rohit Sharma’s test form
Speaking on the ICC Review, Shastri stated that he wouldn’t be surprised if the Indian captain decides to retire from test cricket after the end of the series in Australia.
Shastri said, “He’ll take a call on his career, but I won’t be shocked if he retires because he’s not getting any younger,“
“If India qualifies for the World Test Championship Final, it’s a different story. Otherwise, this might be the right time for him to go out with a blaze of glory.“
Shastri discussed that there are a lot of quality batsmen sitting on the bench, waiting for more chances in the test side.
He continued, “There are young players waiting in the wings, like Shubman Gill, who averages over 40 in 2024. Seeing a player of that quality sitting on the bench makes you wonder. So I wouldn’t be surprised, but it’s ultimately his decision.“
