Rohit Sharma has managed only 19 runs in the ongoing BGT 2024-25 so far.

India captain Rohit Sharma spoke on the form of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. India and Australia will clash in the 4th test of the series in Melbourne from December 26, 2024.

The BGT 2024-25 is tied 1-1 with two tests remaining, and the results will also have an impact on both sides’ chances of reaching the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final in June 2025.

Jaiswal had started the series well by scoring 161 runs in the second innings of the Perth test. However, since then, Jaiswal has fallen to Mitchell Starc twice in first over itself. It remains to be seen whether Yashasvi Jaiswal will regain his old form back on batting-friendly wicket in Melbourne.

But still, India captain Rohit Sharma backed Jaiswal to come good and said that India team management will not tinker with how the left-handed opener plays.

“When you have a guy like [Jaiswal] in your squad, in your team, you don’t want to tamper too much with his mindset. Let him be as free as possible and not overburdened with too many thoughts regarding his batting. He understands his batting more than any one of us, you know,” Rohit told reporters during press conference.

“Every venue here has different challenges. So, it’s just about adapting to those challenges, playing on different pitches. The bowlers are the same. So, it’s just about understanding what they usually do and what are their plans against certain batters when we come out to bat. And then just going out there and doing their thing,” he added.

Shubman Gill knows how to score big runs: Rohit Sharma

On the other hand, Shubman Gill has been struggling as well. He missed the first test in Perth after injuring his thumb, but in the next two tests, he had scores of 31, 28, and 1 in Adelaide and Brisbane.

But, Sharma backed Gill to come good and he also stated that Gill knows how to score big runs, and hopes Melbourne will bring the best out of him, as he had made his test debut at the venue.

“Talking about Gill, I mean, look, he is quality, we all know that. It’s just about backing that quality and making sure, you know, we give clear messaging to him and not, again, like Jaiswal, we don’t want to complicate too many things with him.

“So he knows how to score big runs. So it’s just making sure that when you get those 30s, 40s, you try and get on to a big one. Because getting in here is the toughest part. And when you get in, that is when you cannot leave that opportunity of scoring that big runs,” Rohit added.

The fourth test of the BGT 2024-25 between India and Australia will begin in Melbourne on December 26.
