Nitish Kumar Reddy is now the leading run-scorer for India in the BGT 2024-25.

On Saturday, in front of a huge crowd at the MCG, with the team in trouble, Nitish Kumar Reddy became the first Indian batsman to hit a test century in Australia from the No. 8 spot.

Reddy’s effort was immensely crucial in the context of the ongoing fourth BGT 2024-25 test match and of the series that is locked at 1-1 as it might help India save the test match with rain around. Still, it’s a long way for the visitors to go to avoid a loss at the MCG and they will need their senior batsmen to step up in their second innings.

Coming to Reddy, it was a huge moment for the 21-year-old who is playing his debut test series and has now jumped to the second spot in the runs chart of this series, sitting behind only Travis Head.

It’s quite telling of Reddy’s temperament, skills and character that he’s India’s leading run-scorer of the series and it’s also telling of the struggles of the other batsmen. In fact, this is the fourth time in this series that Reddy finished as India’s innings top-scorer.

In reply to Australia’s first-innings total of 434, India found themselves in a huge trouble at 221/7 on day 3. From thereon, their punt of playing an extra all-rounder in Washington Sundar over specialist batsman Shubman Gill was vindicated.

Sundar formed a terrific partnership of 127 (285) with Nitish Kumar Reddy for the 8th wicket, which is now the second-highest 8th wicket stand for India in Australia in test cricket.

Sundar scored 50 (162) with only one four in his innings. At the other end, Reddy was a lot more enterprising, giving the charge to the Aussie bowlers and playing powerful strokes. He reached his century with an audacious lofted straight drive off Scott Boland, sending the MCG crowd up on its feet.

Reddy scored 105* off 176 balls, having hit 10 fours and a six in his memorable knock.

Fans and ex-cricketers lavished praise on Reddy on Twitter for his thrilling maiden test century.
