Washington Sundar was dismissed by Pat Cummins for 14 runs in the SCG test.

Another controversy regarding the Snicko technology and the third umpire has sparked up in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25.

This series, played in highly competitive spirit, has been tarnished with multiple controversial calls made by the third umpire. While it was Yashasvi Jaiswal at the MCG, it is Washington Sundar at the SCG who would feel hurt and wronged by the third umpire.

The Sydney test, the last of the series that stands at 2-1, got underway on Friday with India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah opting to bat first after winning the toss on a green surface.

A few Indian batsmen got starts and spent time in the middle, but none of them could really kick on to reach a half-century.

Sundar was the eighth wicket to fall at the score of 148 in a controversial manner. It was similar to Jaiswal’s dismissal in the second innings at the MCG.

Cummins aimed to bounce out Sundar, who went for a pull shot but missed it. Alex Carey was the only one who made a confident appeal, which the on-field umpire turned it down. Carey convinced Cummins for a DRS.

The third umpire, Joel Wilson, used Snicko to check for an edge or a glove on the ball. There were murmurs throughout the decision process on the Snicko, which made it difficult for the umpire.

There was a spike in the frame after the ball had just passed the bottom of Sundar’s glove. Wilson concluded that the spike was because of the ball brushing the glove, though that was inconclusive for the viewers and experts.

Wilson said, “Got a spike on the edge there, ball is very close to the glove. I can’t differentiate any gap between ball and glove… Yeah, I have a spike. No gap between bat and ball.”

The on-field call of not out was reversed and Sundar, with an upset look, dragged himself off the field.

Twitter reactions to Washington Sundar’s controversial dismissal in SCG test:

The decision by the third umpire was met with ire on social media.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted, “No way is that OUT … that’s an awful decision …”

Former India batsman Robin Uthappa commented, “I’m sorry but that’s a crap decision!! Sure the was a spike but from the side angle there was a clear space between ball and glove. There is a lot of ambiguity with these kind of decisions. Benefit must go to the batter.”
