Big Bash League 2024-25 started on December 15 2024.

The league stage of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 concluded on Sunday, January 19, and Australia’s premier T20 league is now ready for the playoffs stage.

This year’s BBL has seen some impressive batting performances, with standout knocks from players like Steve Smith, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Matthew Short, and Glenn Maxwell.

Hobart Hurricanes have topped the league stage with 15 points and seven wins from 10 games. Their top order, including Caleb Jewell and Mitchell Owen, has been consistent with the bat. Their only losses this season came against Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars.

Following Hobart on the table, the Sydney Sixers finished the league stage with 14 points from 10 games. The team received a major boost towards the end with Steve Smith’s availability.

Playing the last three games for the franchise, Smith scored a century and a half-century in the first two matches against Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers. However, their third game against Sydney Thunder was washed out due to rain.

Another team who have impressed are Sydney Thunder. The team finished third on the points table under the leadership of experienced captain David Warner. Warner has led by example, scoring 346 runs in nine innings at an average of 57.66.

Thunder have been unlucky in terms of weather. Two of their games were washed out due to rain, but they still managed to earn 12 points from 10 games, with the help of five wins.

At the fourth spot, we have Melbourne Stars, who have made an amazing comeback to keep their hopes alive for maiden BBL title. After losing the first five games, they won the next five to finish with 10 points from 10 games.

Glenn Maxwell has been the standout player for the franchise in the last three games, scoring 58, 90* and 76* in those matches.

Big Bash League 2024-25: List of teams who qualified for the playoffs

  • 1. Hobart Hurricanes – 15 points
  • 2. Sydney Sixers – 14 points
  • 3. Sydney Thunder – 12 points
  • 4. Melbourne Stars – 10 points

BBL follows a similar playoff format to the Indian Premier League (IPL). The table toppers face the second-placed team, with the winner qualifying directly for the final. The loser of this match then plays the winner of the game between the third and fourth-placed teams to secure a spot in the final.

Hobart Hurricanes will face Sydney Sixers in the Qualifier game in Hobart on January 22, where the winners will secure a spot in the final.

Meanwhile, Sydney Thunder will take on Melbourne Stars in the Knockout game on January 23. The losers of the game will be eliminated, while the winners will face the losers of the Hobart vs Sixers game to decide the second finalists.

Challenger is scheduled for January 24, while the final will take place on January 27. The venues for both games will be decided based on the results of Qualifier and Challenger.
