ODI cricket took a backseat in 2024 after a blockbuster 2023, which saw India host ICC Cricket World Cup.
The early part of 2024 was dominated by T20 cricket with teams looking to strengthen their preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. As the year progressed, test cricket stole the spotlight with all the test playing nations competing for a spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final.
Despite limited opportunities, several bowlers left their mark in ODI cricket this year. In this article, we will take a look at the five highest wicket-takers in ODI cricket in 2024.

5. Nosthush Kenjige (USA) – 20 wickets
United States of America (USA) spinner Nosthush Kenjige ended 2024 with 20 wickets in 12 games at an average of 21.90. Known for his variations, Nosthush’s impressive tally includes a four-wicket hall.
Kenjige’s best bowling performance in 2024 came against Nepal in Dallas, where he took 4/52. His crucial spell helped the USA restrict Nepal to a total of 286. The hosts ultimately won the game by three-wickets.
4. Allah Ghazanfar (AFG) – 21 wickets
Allah Ghazanfar has been a revelation for Afghanistan in 2024. The 18-year-old off-spinner is widely regarded as the ideal successor to Mohammad Nabi. Ghazanfar’s 21 wickets in 2024 were instrumental in Afghanistan’s series wins against South Africa, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.
His best bowling performance of the year, 6/26, came against Bangladesh at Sharjah, where his spell powered the hosts to a commanding 92-run victory. His was named Player of the Match for his efforts.
3. Aryan Dutt (NED) – 21 wickets
Aryan Dutt first came into limelight for his economical bowling display during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The Netherlands off-spinner ended 2024 as the third-highest ODI wicket taker with 21 wickets in 12 games at an average of 18.71. His impressive tally includes a five-wicket haul.
His best bowling figures of 6/34 came against Namibia at Kirtipur. Dutt’s brilliance with the ball helped the visitors bowl out Namibia for just 124 runs.
2. Dilon Heyliger (CAN) – 26 wickets
Canada medium pacer Dilon Heyliger ended 2024 as the joint-highest wicket-taker in ODI cricket (behind on average) with 26 wickets in 14 games at an average of 22. His impressive tally includes a five-wicket haul and two four-wicket hauls.
Dilon’s best bowling figures of 5/31 came against Nepal at King City in September. He also contributed with the bat, scoring 30 runs in the game. His all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
1. Wanindu Hasaranga (SL) – 26 wickets
Veteran Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga capped off 2024 as the joint-highest wicket-taker in ODIs this year, claiming 26 wickets in just 10 matches at an average of 15.61. Hasaranga played a key role in Sri Lanka’s success in ODIs in 2024.
Hasaranga’s most memorable performance the year in ODI cricket came against Bangladesh at Chattogram, where he claimed 7/19 to help the visitors to a three-wicket win.
