Will Brendon McCullum get sacked after England’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final defeat to India?

Brendon McCullum is the current head coach of England Cricket Team in all three formats. Initially, he was only the test coach but was given the responsibility of the white-ball teams in January 2025. Under his guidance, England made it to the semi-finals of T20 World Cup 2026.

England’s journey in T20 World Cup 2026 ended after their defeat against India in the semi-final 2 on March 5 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In the high-scoring clash, the Harry Brook & Co. could not chase a 254-run target.

With Sanju Samson’s (89) half-century and crucial knocks by Ishan Kishan and Shivam Dube, the Men-in-Blue posted 253/7 after being asked to bat first. Jacob Bethell hammered an impeccable century but his efforts went in vain as England remained short of seven runs for victory in the end.

In a conversation with Sky Sports, McCullum asserted that he loves his job as England’s head coach and would love to carry on with the role. The New Zealand batting legend also added that they would analyse the team’s strengths and weaknesses after their performance in the T20 World Cup.

“I love the job. It’s a great job. It doesn’t come without its challenges, of course, but that is the nature of it. I feel we have achieved some really cool things over the last few years but there is still so much to achieve with the side, across all formats. I would love to carry on, so we will see what unfolds over the next little while,” he said.

“Right now, after being on the road for a fair bit of time, it’s about getting home, watching some fast horses and playing some shocking golf. A bit of time to reflect, to let things land and objectively look at what is and isn’t working. We will see what happens. I would love to help lead the team through to the next stage,” McCullum further stated.

Notably, McCullum’s contract as England’s head coach runs till the end of 2027. Therefore, he will also coach the team in the ODI World Cup next year in South Africa.

Although Harry Brook & Co. could not win the title in T20 World Cup, they showed a brilliant form after a shaky start. They won against Nepal by a close margin of four runs in the first game, followed by a defeat against West Indies.

However, they were unbeaten in the Super 8 round, winning three games in a row against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and New Zealand. They also became the first team to book a spot in the semi-finals.
